Fashion’s Latest

Here’s a remixed version of Fashion’s Latest, which I originally composed and recorded almost 2 years ago, with new additions. Dan Sutherland of the band Aleph-1 played drum kit. This version of the song is to be featured on an upcoming Block-M Records release. Please comment.

I like the new version. Drum kit was a significant improvement.

the drums definitely help drive the song, especially through the chorus, so well done. a couple of places i noticed, however: they cover up the trombone solo at 1:40 and the trumpet line throughout–both interesting parts that could be more prominent.

i dunno, having listened to several earlier versions of this song, i may not be the best judge simply because i tend to hear the drums as “extras” (however complementary they may be) rather than organic components of the original recording. it’s hard, therefore, to listen without separating the drum track from the rest of the instruments and paying more critical attention to this new version.

and YES, i did listen using headphones and my “good” speakers.

In response to the trombone solo comment: the drums don’t cover it up, it was a conscious decision to turn down the trombone. That trombone take was actually meant to be a scratch take, but I liked it so much that I kept it. I think it should be thought of as less of ‘solo’ per say… which is why it’s a bit less present in the mix now. Thanks for listening though.

I like the trombone better in the background. While the parts are interesting, they add more ambiance than anything in my mind. As such, I like them turned down. It allowed me to focus better on the bass line, and the added drums.

Also enjoyed the kit addition. I felt that it gave the music more direction during the middle parts (which I previously thought tended to get a bit weighed down in the prior version).

For whatever reason, this mix feels much more coherent as a whole in comparison to the first version.

Yeah, pretty much sounds dope the way it is. Never really thought the trombone was a “solo” as much as just another part. I mean people usually think of anyone playing one note at a time as a “solo” these days but you can’t really play more than one note at a time with a trombone (at least very easily). Either way, i love the mix of acoustic and electronic drums, really cool feeling of “am I in an electronic world or a more organic world”.

Props to DK for another song well done

Devin, tight mix man! I happened to swing by your website and enjoyed the piece. Although I’d have to listen to it a couple more times to get ‘critical’, everything just seemed to have its place in the mix. The drums fit in right well with the mix. Great job dude. Make me miss your bass playing too from ibm!
